Chapter fourteen

Maya

I step into the grand hallway, my heart racing with each click of my heels on the polished floor. The morning light filters through the stained-glass windows, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the room. But even this beauty can't distract me from the knot in my stomach.

What was I thinking? Kissing Kaito like that? It's not like me to be so impulsive. But in that moment, seeing his vulnerability, feeling his pain—I couldn't help myself. Now, I'm terrified of facing him.

As I approach the dining hall, I hear the soft clink of china. Kaito must be having his morning tea. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever comes next. Will he be cold? Dismissive? Or worse, will he ask me to leave?

No. I can't let fear hold me back. Whatever happens, I don't regret that kiss. There's something about Kaito that makes me want to be bolder, to embrace a side of myself I've kept hidden. It's exhilarating and terrifying all at once.

But I need to get my head on straight. I'm here to help Kaito find Yumi, the woman he truly loves. That should be my focus, not these confusing feelings swirling inside me. I have to remember that Kaito's heart belongs to someone else, someone who needs our help.

Taking one last steadying breath, I push open the door to the great hall.

I step into the dining room. To my surprise, Kaito's face brightens when he sees me. The knot in my stomach loosens a bit, and I can't help but feel a warmth spread through my chest. I try to push the feeling away, reminding myself why I'm really here.

"Good morning, Maya," Kaito says, his voice soft. "Would you like some tea?"

I nod, grateful for the distraction. "Yes, please."

He pours me a cup, and I settle into a chair across from him. For a few moments, we sit in comfortable silence, sipping our tea. The tension from last night seems to have dissipated, replaced by a strange sense of peace.

Finally, Kaito breaks the silence. "I've been thinking about the journal you found," he says. "Was there anything else that stood out to you?"

I hesitate, my fingers tightening around the teacup. There was something, but I'm not sure how to bring it up. Taking a deep breath, I decide to just say it.

"Actually, there was one thing," I say, watching Kaito's face carefully. "Yumi mentioned visiting a woman named Akira. That’s… that’s my mother’s name.”

Kaito's eyebrows rise slightly, but he doesn't seem as surprised as I expected.

"That has to be a coincidence, right?" I add quickly, suddenly feeling uncertain.

Kaito sets his cup down, his amber eyes meeting mine. "Maybe. But I am not a fan of attributing everything to coincidence immediately." He brings his hand to his chin as though lost in thought, then nods as though he settled on something. "Yumi had a book of family photos. It has to also be in those boxes. We need to see if we can find a photo of Akira.
